Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall to Spread Across the Mid-South into Tuesday Night

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall will spread across the mid-South into Tuesday night as an area of low pressure tracks eastward.

The biggest threat for severe weather, including tornadoes, is across northern Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued the following watches:

– A tornado watch valid until 10 p.m. CDT for northern Alabama, northeastern Mississippi and the southern half of western and Middle Tennessee. This watch area includes Huntsville, Alabama, and Tupelo, Mississippi.

– A tornado watch valid until midnight CDT for parts of northeast Alabama, northwest Georgia and far southeast Tennessee. This watch area includes Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Rome, Georgia.


Current Radar, Watches and Warnings

Early Tuesday evening, a large tornado touched down near Tishomingo, Mississippi, in the northeastern portion of the state, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a rare tornado emergency for parts of southwestern Colbert County in northwestern Alabama. Radar detected debris lofted some 20,000 feet into the air, indicative of damage from a strong tornado.

According to the police chief in Tishomingo, the Dollar General just north of town was destroyed, several houses lost their roofs and injuries were reported.

Areas from east-central Arkansas to Tennessee, northern Mississippi, northern Alabama and northwestern Georgia have the greatest risk of strong to severe thunderstorms through Tuesday evening. The most concentrated threat area extends across far northeast Mississippi, southern Middle Tennessee, and northern Alabama, including Huntsville.

Tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds and large hail are all threats from these storms.

Heavy rain will accompany the stormy weather as well. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has highlighted areas from southern Tennessee to northeastern Mississippi, northern Alabama, northern Georgia and southwestern North Carolina as having a moderate risk of excessive rainfall through Tuesday night.
